Go back         Just a few of the THINGS TO DO AND SEE

Do the Cowra Breakout Trail

Start at the Information Centre and watch the 9 minute Hologram about the Cowra Japanese Prisoner of War Breakout.

Cross the Lachlan River and turn Left and then Left again and continue out along the Canowindra Road and visit Cowra’s Japanese War Cemetery.  Cowra’s Japanese War Cemetery is unique in the world, in that it is the only Japanese War Cemetery outside Japan.  Use your phone to listen to the audio here.

Then meander around to the site of the POW Camp. Listen to the audio at the Guard Tower.  Use your phone to listen to other interesting pieces of information.

Follow the Cherry Tree Avenue to Cowra’s award winning Japanese Gardens.  The audio tour is a must do – you will miss so much if you don’t.  Even if you are knowledgeable about Japanese gardening, this garden is different in many respects.   Don’t forget to check out the Cultural Centre and the Gift Shop.  Have a coffee or some lunch in the Cafe.

Drive up to the lookout and enjoy an amazing vista over the town of Cowra and the Lachlan Valley.   There is a small road on the left near the top of the lookout with an open gate.  This leads you down the back side of the hill which brings you to the start of a tree lined avenue straight ahead, (Darling Street).  Drive down here and park in the Carpark on your left.

Visit the Cowra Regional Art Gallery.  Walk across the road and visit  Australia's World Peace Bell.  Unique in Australia and the world, in that it is the only Peace Bell erected outside a nation’s capital city.

Turn Left at the Main Road (towards Sydney) and about a block down on the right is the Italian Hands of Friendship monument/sculputure

Next Stop - The Mill – Windowrie’s Cellar Door.  The building itself is a must see in its own right.  It was once part of an old flour mill and is Cowra's oldest buiding.  It was built in 1861 from local granite and has been painstakingly restored.    Must go upstairs and look around – and - check out the facilities while you are there…!  Enjoy a wine tastingand perhaps a cheese platter.  Take your VIP Token and get 15% off all purchases.

Head to the Rose Garden Café (next to the Cowra’s Visitor Information Centre) a popular spot for a final coffee and good byes before heading home.

If there wasn’t enough time to do just these few things, then we encourage you to return, for there is much much more to see and do here in Cowra.

There is more to come but in the meanwhile check out the Local Information screen.
